the sound is gorgeous, shimmering vibrato against clean lines, the sheer musicality is striking.”   – James Manheim, AllMusic Review

Sidney Sussex College has an illustrious musical tradition dating back to 1596 when the college was established by Lady Frances Sidney. William Byrd wrote two elegies for Lady Sidney’s nephew and many other early British composers took their degrees there. In 2009, the superb American composer Eric Whitacre was appointed as Composer in Residence and in 2015 this mantle was passed on to Joanna Marsh.

The Choir is a major focus of College life, and is made up of six to eight sopranos, six altos (male and female), six tenors, three baritones, and three basses. During term time the Choir has a regular commitment in the Chapel to Choral Evensong on Fridays and Sundays and Latin Choral Vespers on Wednesdays. Annual performance tours abroad take place during the vacations, most recently to the USA, Madrid and Rome.

Sidney Choir performs a wide range of music from late medieval to newly commissioned works. The Choir excels primarily in music of the 16th century (the research specialism of the Director of Music) and the late 19th/ early 20th centuries, but endeavours to maintain a healthy balance of music from all periods.

Since 2007 the choir has been directed by Dr David Skinner who has worked with many of the leading choral groups in the UK – The Tallis Scholars, The Sixteen and The King’s Singers – and it has blossomed into one of the most esteemed choirs in Oxbridge.

Tonight’s concert will be a joyous celebration of Christmas and include well-known carols and Christmas songs. As in previous years, the church will be lit by candles for this concert. Traditionally, this concert sells out, so it is advisable to purchase your tickets early in order to avoid disappointment.
